How Traffic Violator School Actually Works

The CA point system, the 18-month rule, what "masking" means for your insurance, and what happens if you blow your deadline. No fluff.

California's DMV Point System

California uses a points system to track driving violations. Points are added to your record when you're convicted of a moving violation — and insurance companies check your driving record when it's time to renew.

How Many Points Trigger a DMV Action?

Points AccumulatedTime PeriodConsequence
4 points12 monthsNegligent Operator warning letter
6 points24 monthsLicense probation
8 points36 monthsLicense suspension

Most minor infractions (speeding, running a red light) count as 1 point. More serious violations (reckless driving, hit-and-run) count as 2 points. Always verify with the DMV.

What Traffic School Actually Does

Traffic Violator School (TVS) doesn't erase your ticket — you still pay it. What it does is mask the point from your public driving record. Your conviction is recorded as "confidential" at the DMV, which means insurance companies can't see it when they pull your record. No point = no insurance rate increase.

The conviction remains on your DMV record in a confidential status and doesn't affect your point count. Law enforcement can still see it, but insurers cannot (under normal circumstances).

You Can Only Do This Once Every 18 Months

California law limits you to using TVS to mask one violation per 18-month period. The 18-month clock runs from citation date to citation date — not from when you completed traffic school.

What the 18-Month Rule Means Practically

  • If you used traffic school for a ticket in January 2024, your next eligible citation must be dated after July 2025 (18 months later)
  • You can still attend traffic school more often — you just can't mask more than one point per 18-month window
  • The court checks DMV records to verify eligibility — you can't get around it
  • If you don't qualify due to the 18-month rule, your only options are to fight the ticket or pay it and take the point

The 90-Day Deadline in Orange County

Unlike some other California counties, Orange County gives you 90 days from the date the court processes your payment to complete traffic school. This clock starts from the court's payment processing date — not the date of your ticket or your court date.

✓ If You Finish On Time

Your completion is filed electronically to the court and DMV. The point is masked. Your insurance never knows. Done.

✗ If You Miss the Deadline

Your ticket conviction is recorded with the point on your public driving record. You'll likely see an insurance rate increase at renewal. The option to mask it is gone.

Extensions

Orange County offers one 30-day extension on your traffic school deadline. You can request it online through My Court Portal, by calling (657) 622-8459, or in person at any justice center.

Extensions on traffic school payment plans are not available. Extensions apply to the completion deadline only. Verify current policy with the court.

Traffic School Won't Help With Everything

California law restricts which violations qualify. None of the following can be masked with traffic school:

  • DUI or DWI violations
  • Reckless driving
  • Violations that require a mandatory court appearance
  • Speeding over 100 mph (requires a judge's order for TVS)
  • Violations while operating a commercial vehicle (CDL holders)
  • Hit-and-run violations
  • Violations that carry 2 or more points (typically — check with the court)

When in doubt, call the court at (657) 622-8459 before paying for anything. We can't issue refunds for ineligible registrations.
